PROCLAMATION OF DEATH OF THE QUEEN
By now we will all be attempting to come to terms with the announcement that Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral on 8th September.
The Queen’s death will mean different things to us all; in a world of constant change, she was a steadying presence – we will all have personal memories and acknowledge the stability she gave us individually and as a country. In an often-turbulent world she was a constant in our lives who we thought would always be there.
Queen Elizabeth II always led with grace and unwavering commitment to duty. I am sure you will join with me in sending our condolences to the Royal Family and particularly to King Charles III who we are confident will maintain his mother’s legacy in the pages of British history.
In the days ahead, as we celebrate the Queen’s extraordinary lifetime of service you may feel you wish to add your own message of condolence in the Condolence Book which is located in the Village Shop, or leave flowers in the porch of St. Swithun’s Church to commemorate and recognise the Queen’s lifetime of service which – as our New Prime Minister said in her statement – “Our country has grown and flourished under her reign; she was the rock on which modern Britain was built”.
As we enter a new era, I am sure you will join with me in supporting King Charles III as he leads us through some difficult, turbulent and changing times – God save the King!

Peter Staples has been an officer of the society since 2005, both as Secretary and Chairman and he is now leaving Bathford for pastures new. We are most grateful for his stalwart service and are pleased that he will continue to maintain the website which we believe is unusually comprehensive for a village of this size. We wish him every success. In his place, Peter Martin has been co-opted as Chairman.
The Committee decided that we would not charge a subscription for 2020/21 but that those currently enrolled would continue as members for this coming year. We would like to start the monthly talks as soon as possible. We are aware that whatever government guidelines* might say it is up to you, the members, to decide when you are ready.
For the record, groups of more than six can meet in a Covid-secure venue, such as the Parish Hall.
We have been in consultation with the Parish Hall Committee and they tell us that the two parts of the Covid-secure hall are capable of hosting 40 people socially-distanced. We cannot provide food or drink. On that basis we would be happy to hold our first talk on either Monday October 26th or Monday November 23rd. We would call a ‘barebones AGM’ (lasts for two minutes of the meeting) to officially elect Peter Martin as Chairman and some other business.
Please advise Peter if you would prefer to come on Oct 26 or wait until Nov 30, or until the new year.
